TV station TV3 Highlights Morphosis Duo’s 10th Anniversary with Bold Concert of Women Composers

Catalan national television (TV3) featured a special segment on the avant-garde ensemble Morphosis Duo during its Telenotícies Migdia broadcast, highlighting the group’s 10th anniversary celebration within the “Música i So” concert series at Ars Santa Mònica in Barcelona.

Formed by baritone saxophonist Joan Martí-Frasquier and pianist, composer, and sound artist Joan Bagés i Rubí, Morphosis Duo marked a decade of experimental music-making with a concert entirely dedicated to women composers. The program explored the interplay between baritone saxophone and electronic soundscapes, pushing the boundaries of contemporary music performance.

The concert featured three groundbreaking works:

  • A CHILLIDA (1997) by Mercè Capdevila, a piece evoking the metallic solidity and spatial limits of sculptural forms.
  • AGRION HASTÉ (2019) by Manon Lepauvre, which captured the fluttering intensity of movement, likened to a butterfly in flight, through real-time electronics.
  • TRIGGER_IIb (2023) by Martina Claussen, a sonic exploration of gestural freedom, likened to a liquid motion that takes various shapes and penetrates all it touches.

Speaking to TV3, Joan Bagés reflected on the concert’s intention: “Sound is not always meant to relax us. Sometimes, it must stir us, provoke us, to awaken our senses, our minds, and our bodies.”

The appearance on TV3 underscored Morphosis Duo’s role in promoting innovative sound art and elevating the voices of contemporary women composers in the experimental music scene.
